No Prior Robotics Experience Required for Most Roles

If you have a passion for supporting students and a few hours to spare, we have a role for you. Training is provided for all volunteer positions.

Ways to Help

Event Referee

1–2 days per eventNo robotics experience required

Referees observe and score qualification and elimination matches on the competition field. You will be trained on game rules before each event and will work as part of a team of referees under the Head Referee.

Skills Helpful

  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Clear communication
  • Comfort with rapid decision-making

Training: All referees receive a training session at the start of each event day covering the season's game rules and referee procedures.

Judge

1 day per eventBackground in engineering, education, or business helpful

Judges conduct team interviews and evaluate engineering notebooks to recognize teams that exemplify the core values of the VEX and RECF programs — not just teams with the best robots. Judging directly supports the educational mission by rewarding the design process, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Skills Helpful

  • Interviewing skills
  • Ability to evaluate written work
  • Fairness and consistency
  • Comfort working in a team of judges

Training: Judges receive training materials and attend a calibration session before interviewing teams.

Field Reset Crew

1–2 days per eventNo robotics experience required

Field reset crews reset the competition field between matches by repositioning game elements according to the game manual. This is one of the most physically active volunteer roles and is essential to keeping the event running on schedule.

Skills Helpful

  • Physical stamina
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions
  • Teamwork
  • Speed and efficiency

Training: Field reset training is provided at the start of each event day.

Registration Desk

Registration desk volunteers check in teams as they arrive, distribute event materials, answer questions from coaches and parents, and help direct attendees. This is a great introductory volunteer role for first-time volunteers.

Skills Helpful

  • Friendly, welcoming demeanor
  • Basic organizational skills
  • Ability to stay calm in a busy environment

Training: Brief orientation provided before the event.

AV / Streaming Support

AV/streaming volunteers operate audio equipment, manage any livestream setup, and handle public address announcements during the event. If your event is being livestreamed, this role is critical to engaging the broader community.

Skills Helpful

  • Experience with AV equipment or streaming platforms (OBS, YouTube Live, etc.)
  • Technical troubleshooting
  • Ability to work independently

Training: Equipment setup walkthrough provided before the event.

Team Mentor

Ongoing through competition seasonRobotics or engineering experience preferred

Mentors work directly with student teams, providing technical guidance on robot design, programming, and competition strategy. Mentors are paired with teams that request additional support — particularly new teams and teams from under-resourced schools.

Skills Helpful

  • Robotics, engineering, or programming background
  • Experience working with youth
  • Patience and encouragement
  • Availability on weekday evenings or weekends

Training: Orientation to current game season and mentoring guidelines provided.

Coach Trainer

Workshop-based (occasional)Robotics or coaching experience required

Coach trainers help deliver our Coach & Team Training program workshops. Topics include robot design, programming, engineering notebooks, and competition strategy. Both in-person and virtual delivery are welcome.

Skills Helpful

  • Strong robotics or STEM teaching background
  • Experience presenting or facilitating workshops
  • Ability to adapt content to multiple experience levels

Training: Coordination with the Board to develop and deliver workshop curriculum.
